THE WORLD OF POETRY AND GOLD
You might ask and fairly so
what do they have in common
the world of poetry, the world of gold?
Both are dredged up from the deep,
at great risk to those that dig,
where day and night seem to meet.
Both have value beyond their weight,
honored by kings and presidents,
since Solomon and the pharaohs reigned.
Both maintain their worth in war and peace,
never tarnish or lose their beauty,
do not go under when their owners cease.
Both have adorned the ears of queens,
walked with them in ancient gardens,
as they whispered secrets like the leaves.
Both take up their role in times of duress,
when kingdoms quake, and rulers fail.
They speak of love, they set their sails
for lands that honor the truly free.
Hated by tyrants, loved by the hunted,
on these two things they both agree ---
Only God is stronger than their appeal.
Only love lasts longer than their shine.
On both they stamp their enduring seal.
