Geopolitics to Main Street: Gold’s Case Is Undeniable
Matthew Piepenburg, Partner at VON GREYERZ, recently joined WTFinance to contextualize the many financial and geopolitical forces which are making the case for gold increasingly undeniable. Piepenburg places the historical pace of central bank gold stacking, decade highs in global bond yields and an increasingly uncertain “conflict” in Iran into blunt context.
The world is changing at a rapid pace because U.S. dollar hegemony is declining at a similar pace. Piepenburg sees an objectively debased USD as evidence of a nation desperately seeking to inflate its way out of debt to the benefit of DC and Wall Street, yet at the expense of the very currency by which millions measure their wealth.
Piepenburg gives his views on U.S. monetary policies in general and Scott Bessent’s recent actions in particular to “solve” a debt crisis with more debt. Piepenburg further reveals how politicians like Bessent believe many things before taking office yet do the precise opposite once in positions of power. Piepenburg argues that Bessent is all too aware of the de-dollarization trap in which America now finds itself and is now running out of viable options to prevent further currency destruction going forward. In this setting, Bessent, like the rest of the world, knows that gold will play an increasingly central role in a monetary system in now open flux. Piepenburg repeats his view that in this light the USA will eventually have to let the gold price run higher and re-value its gold certificates to market in order to “de-deficit” its otherwise openly broken balance sheet.
Piepenburg moves from economic indicators and other signals from the bond market to simple anecdotal narratives from what he (and all of us) see all around us in the daily experience of citizens struggling to navigate financial reality. Such grassroots signals combine with macro-economic indicators to tell us a blunt yet necessary truth: Inflation destroys wealth—from the sovereign level to the Main Street, High Street, and Hauptstrasse level. In this backdrop, gold is no longer a debate; it is essential.
